about

For those of us who suffered a particularly cold winter, we are currently permitting the glorious sunshine to take over every spare moment of our lives. However, when the sun sets, and shades are drawn, our collective fascination with the horror/dark drama series phenomenon remains undiminished.

From the serenity of his Belgian home, Tim Handels presents ‘Downbeat Darkness 3’ (PEDD010).

Taking in surreal trailer style drama and world infused retro-tronica, this elegantly crafted collection contains every mood supervisors in search of haunting, eerie backdrops could ever need.

It begins with the shimmering, elegiac ‘Immigrants’. A dreamlike arpeggio is punctuated by cinematic drum fills and voice-like synth melodies tinge the track with the air of an 80’s horror soundtrack.

Jugular’s pianistic grandeur is abetted by driving percussion and tinkling synths. A mysterious, exploratory air is developed upon with finesse. Tracking shots or ones involving travel will look great whilst this pulses away.

Disappearing Act employs a Tangerine Dream like mellotron to cast disquieting swathes of melody over a funereal drone. Reverse effects and synth stabs are then introduced to potentially provide sonic hints to developing plots or added layers of intrigue.

Lost harnesses a more hopeful mood with an insistent bass drum to confidently drive the track down a Kraftwerk influenced autobahn. 1970’s sequencers are employed to charming effect as an emotional, yet positive mood unfurls in its later half.

Memento Mori takes the most solemn aspects of this collection to their logical conclusion. The heartbeat thud of the bass drum urges the listener to ruminate on the beauty of existence in the face of tragedy. Fascinating sound design and heart-breaking melodies make this worthy of inclusion on cinematic scenes of monumental importance.
